How you can easily and efficiently upgrade your education for new career opportunities
When the education you have isn’t enough to get you the job or promotion you want, it’s time to upskill. Upskilling is the process of expanding your capabilities and adding new skills to your repertoire. While advancing your education in any way could be seen as upskilling, I tend to look at it as acquiring specialized, job-focused skills through course-specific education.
It’s a thoughtful approach to maintaining reliable work. In July, Strategy + Business published an article about upskilling featuring a study focused on the future of job availability and job change. The article explained that the study, “published by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development in 2018 estimated that 46 percent of all jobs have at least a 50 percent chance of being lost or greatly changed.”
The World Economic Forum (WEF) approaches upskilling more directly, stating in an article that, “as the world faces the transformative economic, social and environmental challenges of Globalization 4.0, it has never been more important to invest in people,” particularly by way of higher education.
The WEF went on to explain that the Fourth Industrial revolution is causing a significant decline in “some roles as they become redundant or automated.” Featured in the article, the 2018 Future of Jobs Report cited a loss of 75 million jobs by 2022 as technology displaces workers. However, these same technological advances “could also create 133 million new roles,” as specialized technicians and engineers are needed to work with machines and algorithms. The piece concluded that, “to proactively realize the benefits of these changes, at least 54% of all employees will need reskilling and upskilling by 2022.”
Upskilling is a game changer because it allows people to quickly and cost-effectively gain the new skills required to improve their situation, no matter what their circumstances. Some organizations implement upskilling programs for jobs being taken over by automation, or for employees who seek to move up the corporate ladder. But most often, the initiative is taken directly by the individual who seeks greater opportunities for themselves. This is where our marketplace comes in. ODEM provides on-demand access to educational courses that focus on subject matter most pertinent to the labor market.
